We reflect on how Jesus spoke of his purpose in coming into the world. For example:
‘I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.’ Or, ‘the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost’.
There are a half-dozen or so of these crucial ‘I have come [+ purpose]’ statements in the Gospels, which take us to the heart of the gospel.
Mission statement’ sounds like the tired jargon of the business world, but it takes on a new lease of life with Jesus. He is about His Father’s unique and saving business; His multi-faceted mission statements are like no others. They reveal the Father’s heart; they show who Jesus really is; they speak salvation to sinners; they explain the incarnation and the cross – they make all the difference in the world, to the world.
So let’s come together to reflect on His life-giving words. Let’s relish the aims of His Advent, His motives for ministry, and the reason for the Easter season.
