Getting a UK driving licence

Does anyone have any thoughts on this question from one of our Partners, living in Asia but coming to the UK for a few months this summer?

Our daughter turns 17 next month so we are looking at getting her a provisional driving license. I followed instructions online from the DVLA – but then reached the point where we had to say we were resident in the UK and resident is taken as being in the UK for at least 185 days per year – I can bet pretty flexible with many things, but even I felt that we couldn’t say that that was true.

Have other people managed to get driving licenses for their children?

  • It's not only children, I had my UK driving licence stolen with my bag a few months ago and I can't even get a replacement while living abroad, despite the anomily that if I hadn't had it stolen I would still (presumably) be perfectly entitled to hold and use the licence.   While I hesitate to advocate lying, the only way we could find to get round it would be to put the address of a family member and then check the box to say that you have lived there less than a month.  The other thing worth remembering but may not be relevant to your daughter, holders of overseas licences are allowed to drive in the UK for up to a year before requiring a UK licence, so for some at least that might be a useful workaround.
