Hi - I am working for AIM International and we have our pre-field orientation for new missionaries 13th - 16th April 2014. We are currently expecting 2 long term and 1 short term families, with 8 children between them ranging from about 10 years down to 18 months old and thus are looking for someone, or a group of people, to run a children's programme for us to help prepare the children for their overseas service. I should mention that the 2 long term families are Dutch but the older children speak good English so would be able to translate for the younger ones. If anyone can help or offer any advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Amy

  • Hi Amy

That's great that you have these 3 families with 8 children on your upcoming orientation course. With the younger ones Claudia's "My Adventure in God's World" (as posted here already) is really useful. There's also the OMF "Off We Go" by Polly Ho & Hwai-Bing Pwee - it was produced 11 years ago but still has some great stuff and ideas in there. We also have our own resource which I can send on CD (or bring to the next Global Connections TCK Forum for you) called "Into All the World.....With Children". That's a guide that you can give to parents as there's a lot of information about transition and adaptation to a new culture in there. There's also plenty of reading about the actual moving process and doing "RAFT" with children. The other facet of this resource is that there are lots of ideas for activities with children - ideas that both parents and staff at a centre like yours can use. these are often linked with activity sheets for direct use with various ages of children. It's from 2011 so pretty current. It isn't a systematic "curriculum" to follow, but can be used in a pick and mix style as appropriate to the children you have. We use these resources on our week-long MKPFO each year we have children.

The other people you might like to talk to are Janet Chapman & Yolanda Jerrard who run things like this for OMF & NTM respectively and run the children's programme on the Family Day at Redcliffe College.

    • Hi Steve

Thank you for your reply. If you could bring the Into All the World...resource you mention above to the forum that would be great - I'm sure it will be really useful.

      Thanks

      • Hi Amy

I'll have a copy with your name on it for the 11th March. See you there.

  • Hi, I've written a workbook for primary school aged children for pre-field prepartion.  It maybe useful to use as a base for what you do.  It's quite creative and could be adapted to the needs of the individual children.  Hope it goes well.  God Bless ~ Claudia
