Is Internet Evangelism a special calling?

This question has been going around my mind. With so many people online now involved in social networking and blogging. Should we be promoting Internet Evangelism as an opportunity that every Christian with an online presence should be considering and be looking for guidance on? Take Facebook for example where one has a mixture a Christian and non-Christian ‘friends’ who may or may not be watching our online activity. I find this both a huge challenge and yet a fantastic opportunity. Non-Christian acquaintances who may not have even known I was a Christian before can now see it if they take a little time to read my profile. Also by me reading their profile I can see where we have common ground and have the opportunity (which admittedly I don’t spend enough time doing) to try and strengthen our friendship and trust … even by just enjoying a game of online Scrabble!I just wanted to try and kick off a discussion…A. Do you have ideas and stories of how Christians use Social networking to build up friendships with Non-Christian friends and when appropriate share the Good News?B. Too what extent do you perceive Internet evangelism as a ‘specialised’ ministry? Please invite your friends/colleagues to join in!

  • Dear Ceri, I feel I'm called by Jesus to develop a business platform with two main purposses: To provide resources for our ministry towards China, and to provide resources for evangelistic missions towards China and other closed cultures, as I would like to use this alternative as a model for other Christians concerned about missions in apparently closed to the Gospel nations.

The business consists in selling Premium Natural Spring Water from our country, flowers from Colombia, maybe coffee, herb tea bags, lyophilized fruits and up to now a hardware item such as Time Delay locks, to supermarkets and hotel chains in the Middle East, maybe through other supermarkets in UK or european nations.

So if you might know about any friend who works with any of these activities who might help us to reach these supermarkets and hotels in these regions, this will be great for our funding in missions. Our churches in Latin America are poor, and most missionary movement towards our nations aim reaching more indigenous people in far away geographic sites. I myself feel this call of Jesus towards China, have been studying Mandarin for three years and believe God is opening a way to take us there, through this business platform.

  • Ceri, There are a number of forums where the questions you raise are discussed more thoroughly. In fact there are entire NETWORKS formed to advance internet evangelism.

I would refer you to these:
    1. InternetEvangelismDay.com (http://www.internetevangelismday.com) where you will find an incredible number of links and resources, as well as promotional materials to promote internet evangelism in the local church.

    2. WebEvangelism.com (http://www.webevangelism.com), the website of the Internet Evangelism Coalition, which is changing its name to Internet Evangelism Network. A group of North American ministries working together to promote Web Evangelism.

    3. Write me for information on a major Internet evangelism network focused on the Arabic and Muslim world that has hundreds of organizations involved. (dhackett@visionsynergy.net)

    4. Subscribe to the GUIDE Network Email list, a group of 175 practitioners who share information and answer questions: Send a blank email to guide-network-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

There are more beyond this - a group specializing in video/media internet evangelism, a Turkish internet evangelism network, a network of major global Christian portal sites, and more.

    • Dear Dave, One of my best Christians friends in Colombia (missionary from Wycliffe) who went to the Lord's Presence, was called also just like you.
One day, visiting the webevangelism site I received a gift to take an online seminar on tentmaking, confirming your argument about the singular influence to promote Evangelism through the web. I've heard on the web that New Fronteirs has a website which focuses towards the Great Commission to these people. Maybe you might find some articles there. Besides, Asia Harvest (www.asiaharvest.com) does also have some work towards these ethnic groups, and derived from this org www.backtojerusalem.org will be an interesting place also.
