OSCARactive & Ning

Now that there's an interesting bunch of people in this group ... I thought I'd ask for your input about OSCARactive! As you can see we've used Ning as our platform. We looked at a few other candiates for building an online community but this seemed to be the most versatile and user friendly. Any comments or opinions ... on OSCARactive, Ning or anything else you wish to chip in with ...

  • Any further opinions from you folks now that OSCARactive has been using Ning for over a year?

We have spent some time exploring how we can integrate Ning with Facebook and Twitter. There are ways of sharing across platforms but it's not easy when they have their own 'culture' of communication. One message doesn't often fit all. It's also hard to tell how successful we are in using FB and Twitter to seed OSCARactive content.

I still have a dream that this increasing 'total communication' solution that is social networking could also be a 'total support' solution for those in remote or isolating situations. Am I too much of an idealist?
  • Hi Tony,

Any chance I can get an invite to the OMF site? I'd be interested to see the design etc...

    Thanks,

Knowing Ning, a new version will appear in a few weeks time.
The current one looks very Face-booky.
Have you looked in their developer forum? http://developer.ning.com/

  • The reason we went for Ning over getting stuck into Facebook, was to keep out of people's private lives.
People go to OMFsocial.net for their OMF interactions and Facebook for private stuff.

Well I'm only a Facebook user - and I blog - but this is an interesting facility. And it is good to see some takeup.

Shame it doesn't interact with FB - seems to be the problem with social networks - most users will I suspect select one (where most of their friends are) and use that. Except for the Geeks - and they will of course inherit the earth (or was that the greeks?)
  • Chat

You can turn on audio alerts in chat, but the default is to have this switched off. Once they're switched on it's quite helpful as you hear a sound when someone is chatting which reminds you to take a look.

I don't think the pop out chat is working in IE at the moment but works in firefox.

Ning inform me that they will be adding "visible alerts" at soon so more people can tell when someone is wanting to chat in the chat room.

What sort of interaction did you have in mind Dick?

    Achieve? What's that then?
Seriously, it's to give all of our users a chance to interact and support each other in a peer-to-peer way rather than always through the central OSCAR 'mother ship'!

I totally agree about the chat 'downgrade'. I wonder how many have even noticed it sitting at the bottom of the page there. Hopefully, they'll rethink it ... but in the meantime I'm looking for a decent chat app. Any suggestions?

Shame they downgraded the Chat feature - it's horrid.
But the rest of the system is good.
Our good developer friends at VisionWT reccomended Ning to us.
It's great for connecting a group of people - our OMF US Volunteer programme "Bridge Asia" are using it.
Do you have any ideas about the network's purpose/shared goal? Is there anything you'd like to achieve?

  • There are ways of 'linking' Ning sites with Facebook ... but, yes, it's not that integrated. I'm sure it'll get better, though, and Googles OpenSocial (which Ning utilises) seems to be the way to go for now.
